Collagen – an important protein
Collagen is quantitatively the most important protein in the human body. It forms the main component of most connective and supporting tissues and determines many of their properties. It is a structural component of bones, cartilage and tendons.
A collagen fibre has considerable tensile strength. For example, breaking a collagen fibre with a diameter of 1 mm requires a load of approximately 10 to 40 kg.
Collagen synthesis depends on vitamin C. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage and bones.
